Themes define the visual appearance and layout of a Typemill site. They control how content is displayed on the frontend, including navigation, typography, spacing, and overall page structure.

Themes can be installed from the theme directory. Some themes are available for free, while others require a Maker or Business license.

What you can do with themes

Themes define the presentation layer of Typemill and can be adapted for different types of websites, for example:

  • documentation websites
  • manuals and user guides
  • eBook-style reading layouts
  • knowledge bases and internal wikis
  • simple content websites and landing pages
  • structured publishing projects

Try themes

Selected themes can be tested on the official Typemill demo instance before installation. This allows evaluation of layout, readability, and structure without setting up Typemill locally.

Install themes

To install a theme, download it from the Typemill Theme Directory, unzip it, and upload the theme folder to the themes directory on your server. Activate the theme in the Typemill admin interface under the system appearance settings.

Configure themes

After installation, each theme can be configured individually to adjust layout, colors, typography, and structural options. Available settings depend on the specific theme.

Develop themes

To develop your own theme, refer to the theme developer documentation and use the dev theme as a starting point.

Themes can also be scaffolded or generated using AI tools and then adapted manually, making it easier to build custom layouts without starting from scratch.
